The Beaches

The beaches in Faro are known locally as ilhas, the sandpits that form the outer edge of the marshlands and lagoons of the Ria Formosa; the best known of which is the Faro beach. While Faro beach is accessible by both road and boat, the other ilhas are usually reached by boat only. Faro beach, or Praia de Faro, is an island that is relatively close to the airport. There is a single lane road bridge that leads to it, and from June to September, a ferry runs to Faro beach from the pier at Porta Nova. There exists a plethora of eateries and hotels on the small island, and the sandy beach can be reached by a promenade that runs along it. You can take part in a variety of water sports, including swimming, jet skiing, and windsurfing while on Faro beach.

Two other ilhas that you may find worth a visit are Ilha Deserta and Ilha Culatra. Ferry trips to these locations also regularly leave from the Porta Nova pier. Ilha Deserta, as its name suggests, is a mostly deserted island, unlike Praia de Faro except for a famous restaurant, the Restaurante O Estamine, whose offerings of the local flavors of the Ria Formosa are a hit with the tourists. You can enjoy a quiet time under the sun on this otherwise uncluttered island. Ilha Culatra lies slightly further to the East and has a permanent community residing on it. If you prefer to have a greater range of eating options, Ilha Culatra is the place to be. A water taxi service is available from its Western end that can get you back to Ilha Deserta, from where you can get a return ferry back to Faro.
